Facebook and Google are corporations that without a doubt collect information about us for profit. Said data is used for advertising to demographic analytics.

As a corporation, public outcry about the company’s data aggregation/retrieval methods can cause the company’s stock price to drop clessentially forcing management to change their policies.
And at the end of the day, Facebook and Google are at the mercy of democratically elected governments. Companies like ByteDance, the holding company of TikTok, is owned directly by the Chinese Government. They have incentives beyond profit and stock price.
TikTok has been proven to take your location every 30 seconds, contact information, keyboard inputs, all other apps you have installed, and much more. This data all goes to the Chinese government. This allows them to do a myriad of nefarious things.
I’m sure you’ve probably seen the bot accounts that are owned by Russia or China on twitter trying to either manufacture consent or stir up conflict. If China owns a platform like TikTok they have the ability to do so uninhibited by twitter’s terms of service.
We’ve seen it on the platform when people talking about the genocide of Uiyghur Muslims in Xinjiang (that is currently ongoing) have been deleted by their CCP directed moderation teams.
Essentially, the government of another country is directly able to decide what topics are most topical and which ones are not. I’m personally not ok with this.
If you are an aspiring entrepreneur or inventor, TikTok is opening you up to having your ideas stolen and mass manufactured with no credit or profits to you. China has been known to not respect intellectual property laws, and will happily steal your hard work.
