I’ve been a bit silent about the DeSean Jackson controversy this week. I’ve been working through my feelings about it. First of all, I will say that NEVER, under ANY circumstances, should you be giving credence to real or fake Hitler quotes that are brazenly anti-Semitic.
Second of all, the promotion of the hateful ideologies of Louis Farrakhan (a man who has also admittedly done many great things for the Black community) towards Jews and the LGBTQ community also does not help. Clearly, DeSean Jackson is ignorant on this and needs more education.
Third of all, the lack of support from non-Jews has concerned me. At a time when anti-Semitism in America has skyrocketed and there have been literal mass shootings and hate crimes targeted at Jews in recent years, I’d hope we’d get more support from our allies. It’s a shame.
Fourth of all, most Jewish people I know are completely supportive of #BlackLivesMatter
and stand in total support of the current peaceful protests and activism movements that have arisen since the death of George Floyd. I wish I would see the same solidarity for Jews and myself.

We are all human, we are all brothers and sisters. The struggle for Black and brown Americans daily is real, but even if we are mostly white and much more privileged, the Jewish people have also struggled for our entire existence. We have so many shared experiences.
Please, I beg of you, be inclusive and intersectional of everyone you know. If you see anti-Black or anti-brown racism, call it out. If you see xenophobia towards Asian Americans and Islamophobia, call it out. And if you see homophobia, transphobia, or anti-Semistism, call it out
The only way to defeat hate is to overwhelm it with love. I hope that DeSean Jackson listens to Julian Edelman’s offer, and reads Mitchell Schwartz’ words and takes them to heart. I hope he learns why the anti-Semitic screed he shared is wrong and grows from it.
And if anyone else sees others saying something that is clearly bigoted and ignorant, never be a bystander. Don’t let it slide. Silence leads to death. We learned that from the Holocaust, World War II, and the Trail of Tears. Spread love not hate. End thread.
