"It's only in hindsight that we call pseudoscience, 'pseudoscience'. At the time, it's just science." - Angela Saini 👏👏👏
(any quotes in this thread may be paraphrased slightly, due to my hearing/typing skills, apologies for any misrepresentation)
A great point about how science as a field began from separating out a demographic (white western rich men) as more sophisticated, more capable of scientific thought
"All facts and all ideas sit inside a context" - and we don't teach these to students in the STEM field. Every field should have classes on that field's history
Eugenic ideas still live on in current scientists and ideas and works... yep
Love the question about 'cancel culture', very timely @ExeterDecol! And loving Angela Saini's response: these arguments for 'academic freedom' and 'free speech' are used in very manipulative ways to give space to ideologies that are harmful
"If something has been debunked for years, how long do we need to continue to debate it in the name of academic freedom/free speech?"
As a society we must ask why researchers can openly be racist, sexist and are still allowed to keep their jobs? (paraphrased heavily)
There are areas where there should be a debate - but how does that debate happen? Who is having the debate? Keeping in mind that demographics in science are skewed
19th century biases shaped frameworks in science heavily and we are still affected by them, legacies of the demographics that dominate(d) science (at that time)
Audience comment that self-driving car biased against darker skin tones could be fixed with proper market research, better cameras, attention to skin tone --> wonderful answer that you cannot think to ask those questions, pay that attention without social sciences on the team!
Framework > Language -- you can change the language to avoid the 'harmful' terms but if you are conducting the same work, using the same framework, you are still creating harm. We should target frameworks more than languages
