Every adult legal permanent resident must carry their green card (GC) at all times. Failing to carry it is a misdemeanor, subject to jail time or fines. So right now, if you lose your GC, you can't get a new one & you might be jailed or fined if stopped without it.

To get to the stage of waiting for your GC is hard. It's expensive. You jump through all the hoops, provide all the documentation. Y'all, I had to present a police certificate from Ghana confirming I had no record there for the year I lived there.

Miss to check a single box? Months of delay if not outright dismissal without further explanation. At some point I tried to expedite my work authorization bc I had a consultancy offer. Virtually impossible, I tried calling USCIS & no one could actually tell me anything

I'm so heartbroken for the all people & families that are affected by this. The only reason I'm not one of them right now is lucky timing. My GC renewal isn't for another year, so I have a few months before getting into it. But I'm already dreading it.

This admin (like others before) have made immigration purposefully more difficult, more expensive, & longer. It's designed to make people give up. It's designed to only have immigrants who can afford it. It's part of the white supremacy embedded in this country.

And none of this touches on the mental & emotional toll of missing family. I won't get to see mine this year. Both my siblings are getting married, my brother is expecting his first kid in October. I won't be able to go to Germany bc this admin has fucked up its COVID response.
