Personally I don't believe that #firelecce is doing any of this destreaming to benefit Black Children. He's been deceptive since the beginning, I believe he's doing this to save money, b/c don't forget they cancelled T&R curriculum updates first when they came into office...
Anything this government does with one hand is a distraction for something they are doing with the other hand. I also think AntiRacism for All Educators need to be retrained about AntiBlackness training, & it should be Mandatory, and should be Diverse panels...
I say this because I still know educators who would call the police on racialized students if they felt threatened by a 10 yr old. Or say shitty things under their breath about racialized students, or do nothing when children are being bullied, or excluded based on race/religion.
As an educator & a parent, I've seen both sides. We are failing our kids. I cannot count how many Black Women Educators, I know that have been pushed out or labelled as difficult in their schools, in the GTA boards, simply for speaking up on behalf of students or themselves...
I had an educator walk into a room I was teaching in, with a Black Woman student teacher and say, loudly in front of the students "Too many Indians, not enough chiefs" -- Then proceeded to cover her mouth and go "ah ah ah" with her hand...
As the Student teacher & I stared at each other in disbelief, I asked if she was comfortable if I left, and the look said no, so I stayed and told the racist lady to leave. Wanna know what happened to that Racist teacher? Nothing. She's still there, I know b/c I check up...
So before we pat the #lyingLecce on the back, maybe keep an eye out for what he's doing with his other hand, or wait to see if he allows the T&R curriculum update. Mitzie Hunter implemented Anti-bias training at a different time, and if only it had been mandatory...
...Combined with Teachers unions not covering for racist educators! There should be FAR more punishment for teachers who are racist, than there currently are. I say this as an educator who has faced abuse from coworkers & admin. My kids have also been victims of teachers...
No one deserves this treatment at school, not the racalized teachers, not the racialized students. The Unions have to do better, the ministry has to do better. Period.
Unless you have diversity in designing AntiRacism training, it is useless. If you haven't experienced systemic racism (Some POC have upheld it) you cannot speak about it. You can help bring voices to the table who have experienced it but you shouldn't be training it.
One more thing. I'm an educator who was threatened by high school students, even when pregnant, & I got ZERO support from Admin.
