We’ve seen this coming, y’all. Anyone who has paid attention to the AKP government and its treatment of historic sites knew this was coming.

Mainstream media coverage will try to make this about religion. I think it’s very important to recognize that this is much more about nationalism and the authoritarian AKP government’s appeal to its right-wing base.
We do this event a disservice by turning this into a discussion about Orthodoxy vs Islam, Greece vs. Turkey, etc. Erdogan’s position on this matter has always been dictated by his commitment to retaining his power, not by piety.
