Here's 8 tips for writing romantic fiction for @RNAtweets #RNAConf20 this weekend:

1. A prologue that's there simply as a teaser to the story isn't needed. Remove.
2. Start chap 1 at the point your protagonist's life changes. Make the conflict massive!

3. Maintain a balance between dialogue, action, description and interior monologue.
4. Don't forget the romance of the setting! Pepper in description of place.
5. Start characterisation from page 1. Use dialogue, actions and viewpoint to build character.

6. The main plot in a romance needs to chart the romantic conflict, have enough twists and a credible resolution.
7. Main characters must have internal conflicts to overcome, not just external conflicts to deal with.

8. Your main character's quest is one about overcoming their problems, personality or past traumas. In the course of this journey they find love. The romance is there to scaffold but it is not there to be a deus ex machina.
