The effort that the power establishment has put into erasing me from historical memory since it became clear I wouldn’t be a mouthpiece for the preservation of the status quo is fascinating to observe. It’s never been entirely successful, though, because people still remember.
South Carolina did not lead the way on the confederate flag. That is a rewriting of history. Despite decades of protest against the flag, Nikki Haley defended its presence right up until the Charleston shootings. And SC refused to lower its flag when AL took its down right away.
There has absolutely been an effort to rewrite the series of events and erase the role civil disobedience played in forcing SC to lower the flag. After I lowered the flag, SC raised it back up and flew it for an additional 2 wks before the statehouse finally relented.
I of course remember those days distinctly, including how July 4th came and went and the flag was still flying there. I was staying with relatives for my own safety during that time. I remember Republican state lawmaker Jenny Horne tearfully begging her colleagues to take it down
This kind of historical erasure has happened a lot in the past (Rosa Parks was a tired seamstress & Claudette Colvin isn’t named at all).
It’s still happening constantly today.
The establishment is still trying to control the historical narrative around the Ferguson uprising.

This is why documenting our own history as a people is so key, because there will be a coordinated effort to whitewash it every time.
Thank you to everyone who remembers what actually happened and who hasn’t allowed the labor of Black activists to be erased and forgotten.
