/ A few final thoughts re: schools. We are not Texas or Florida. If I lived there, I would not be advocating to re-open schools. They have 10,000 new infections a day, we have 0-5. We did the work to #FlattentheCurve and now kids deserve an education
/ There will be parents who are not comfortable sending their kids to school at all, and the schools are obligated to provide them with an equivalent and robust virtual education option. No piecemeal emergency schooling. An equivalent full-time curriculum.
/ A safe return to school cannot happen without new resources for schools. No one has costed out what it will cost and what cleaning/ventilation measures and how many additional teachers and spaces will be needed. We need this info NOW so we can advocate with @fordnation
/ To @OCDSB and teachers’ unions: we have your back. Parents are your best advocates. Tell us what you need and let us advocate for/with you. We are all in this together. It benefits everyone to have children back in school, safely.
/ As I said on @OttawaMorning, EVERY decision we make should be with the goal of safely re-opening schools. As the province moves into Stage 3, I implore @fordnation + @celliottability to hold back on re-opening of bars or indoor restos that could lead to a spike in infections
/ In addition to schools being a children’s rights issue, it’s also an issue of substantive/economic equality for women. Listen to economists like @ArmineYalnizyan — this could drastically reduce workforce participation + drive women + kids into deep poverty. We. Need. Schools.
