I’m breaking my vacation social media fast to remember Jay Severin. He taught me 3 foundations of opinion that I use daily.
1) Have you done your homework; consumed every bit of information you can before forming opinion? Have you worked to be the master of the subject at hand?
2) Compared to what? Data and behavior means nothing without context.
3) How will you explain your silence to your children? This point he made repeatedly & passionately during the child rape scandal of the Catholic Church.
I didn’t often agree with Jay, but I always respected his seriousness and thoughtful consideration of topics. Eventually he came to support marriage equality for same-sex couples, and he got there using his own vigorous process.
