Part of the difficulty we will all face is mourning the lives we once enjoyed and the things we took for granted. The simple and silly things. This is a real grief.

There are a lot of people in denial, which is the first stage of grief. If it looks mad, that's because it is.
Bournemouth beach was denial. People looked at that debacle and wondered whether the British had lost their heads. In a way they have.

It's a refusal to adjust to a new reality. The outright denial of that reality. This mass pathology will find newer, more dangerous expressions
Nothing will be like it was in your youth. In fact, the pace of change and crisis will accelerate. Covid-19 is the first in an unstoppable cascade of such changes.

UK can't "go back to being great" - as the magical thinking of Brexit has it. Fantasies of regression won't help
A governing junta that participates in, and panders to, the denialist fantasies of its population is like a caregiver amplifying the delusions of his patient for cynical gain. It's a folie-a-deux and it will end in catastrophe.
The countries who will most successfully deal with the coming crises are those who are prepared to look them straight in the eye, treat their populations like adults, and attempt to bring their citizenry along with them. C-19 is a trial run. You can already see who will lose.
