This narrative of constantly asking POC to reflect on their experiences of racism needs to STOP. When did it become our responsibility to educate? Especially when so many dismiss it anyway? Speaking about racism brings back traumatic memories, it affects you emotionally. (Thread) https://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/1281468192578252800
You don't just bring up trauma & expect someone to educate you on it. This is bringing up years of suppression for some, memories they may or may not have dealt with. But for the sake of educating, including ignorant bigots that couldn't care less, POC sacrifice their wellbeing
In hope of brining about some sort of change. This approach is so WRONG & backwards. Provide people with the education they NEED within the education system rather than CONSTANTLY asking POC to reflect on their traumatic experiences, it's exhausting, it's draining having to
Relive the experiences over and over and over again, you start to question your actions, even if it was from years ago, you start to feel those feelings you've tried so hard to deal with. All for someone to turn around & say "get over it" or "racism doesn't exist" etc..
Don't expect one person to reflect & represent all other people that "look" like them. Our experiences differ, as well as our coping mechanisms. How this mentality is still existing baffles me every single hour of the day.
If you want change, examine the education system, start small, look at employability rates re ethnicity. If you want personal experiences, provide a safe space for POC to come forward & talk rather than putting them on the spot, live on national TV! I for one have & will step
Forward to share my experiences with others (in a safe space) because I've learnt to deal with them, I've had closure, but the same can't be said for other POC. Be mindful, be kind, be understanding, these are some of the tools needed for a better, more coherent society
