This dam, renamed from Salma dam in 2015 as a gratitude gesture to India, is located on Hari river in Western #Afghanistan. It was a major project of Mohammad Daud Khan, Afghanistan’s first President, in 1976.

WAPCOS Ltd., an Indian company, first started work on the dam in 1976, but work was halted due to the 1979 Soviet intervention. Attempts to resume work in 1988 failed due to the ongoing violence and political instability. The same company restarted work on the dam in 2006./AF

The dam, built with #India’s approx. $300 million financial support, was inaugurated on 4 June 2016 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. It can produce 42 MW electricity and provide irrigation solution for over 70,000 hectares of land. /AF

Attacks on the dam:
Some Afghan officials believe Iran were helping the Taliban attack the dam since this dam would reduce flow of water into Iran. Suspicions grew stronger when Abdulqudus Qayam, the governor of Chishti Sharif where the dam is located, was killed in 2010./AF
