The proportion of new applicants receiving their first #UniversalCredit payment on time has improved significantly, but the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) needs to do more to support vulnerable people. Our new report looks at the process: http://orlo.uk/NAO_report_pX30J (1/4)
Applicants can receive advances to help them manage during their wait for the first payment, that must be paid back at a later date. Despite these advances, the wait for the first payment can exacerbate existing financial hardship and debt. (2/4)
We also found that the cost of implementing Universal Credit has risen by £1.4 billion and that the DWP has made poor progress in reducing fraud and error. (3/4)
Our report covers the period before the #COVID19 pandemic, which has led to unprecedented numbers of people making new Universal Credit claims. Our recommendations will help DWP support vulnerable people through this process. (4/4)
