Working on my #BigBollywoodBook and realising how most of my white friends, colleagues, acquaintances have NEVER asked me about my research interest
I mean even the white Film Studies colleagues expect I should know every bit of Hollywood, Fremch, Italian etc cinema because that is how I must ‘prove’ my cinephilic, scholarly cred.
But not one of them knows Indian commercial cinema!
But not one of them knows Indian commercial cinema!
More importantly, in 2+ decades of film scholarship, i have not met a whiite film scholar who is interested in Indian cinrma and not also ‘South Asia’ expert.
Worse, I should know the most obscure western white cinema - and am expected to watch it - but very rarely is this reciprocated.
So random white friends expect me to waitch Icelandic, Czech, etc flicks but wil never sit through desi cinema

And ffs if they do agree to watch Indian cinema, they want Satyajit Ray or something equally coded in western terms. And that means commercial cinema is verboten
You want to talk decolonisation? Let’s start with white folk watching the oldest and biggest film industry

And yeah fuckers, I judge you.
I watch you perform equslity, social justice, decolonisation but never even noticing the biggest globsl cultural industry of the past century...
Call it what you will. I call you racist (though I may not say it to your face)
