/ COVID ( @UCSanDiego) Chronicles - July 9, 2020
@UCSDHealth had 54 positive #SARSCoV2 PCR tests in the last 24 hours (a new high), increasing 7 day rolling average to ~28/day. The last 5% positive rate was mid-April, when testing volume was much lower. Our testing team is busy!

/ @SanDiegoCounty rolling 14-day average of #COVID testing is also way up, indicating high community prevalence - stay masked and distanced!
/ These per capita infection rates are part of why @SanDiegoCounty re-instated restrictions on in-door activities - 18 of the last 25 outbreaks were traced to bars and dining in restaurants.... https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/health/story/2020-07-06/san-diego-enters-governors-covid-penalty-box
/ As @tesswilkry writes on social-distance shaming, the confidence interval around “I am being careful” is really wide, and concrete guidance makes challenges easier to resolve. Masks work, and states should require them unequivocally. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/reopening-psychological-morass/613858/
/ Hospitalization for #COVID across @SanDiegoCounty is at a new high. Fortunately, these #'s do not risk either ICU or overall bed capacity. @UCSDHealth is caring for 47 inpatients with #COVID19 today. Similar ↑ in inpatients across @UofCAHealth

/ As the US #COVID count crosses 3M and the death toll exceeds 130k, US, Dr. Fauci warns that we are still "knee-deep" in the first wave. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fauci-warns-us-knee-deep-coronavirus-first-wave/
/ Contact tracing works well for sexually transmitted diseases...but is hard to scale for respiratory diseases. In our close partnership with @SanDiegoCounty public health, it has been obvious that the program has been unable to keep up with this surge. https://www.kpbs.org/news/2020/jul/07/how-contact-tracing-going-san-diego/
/ We have options to enhance contact tracing with privacy-preserving technology. European countries like Germany, Great Britain, and now Ireland have all rolled out exposure notification apps using the @Apple / @Google API https://9to5mac.com/2020/07/06/covid-19-tracker-ireland/
/ Current contact tracing is failing the state of California. When will @CAPublicHealth allow an opt-in exposure notification app to move forward? @UCSDHealth and @UCSDH_IS will build and help measure!

/ On the treatment side, I am pleased that @UCSDHealth has launched a clinical trial of #COVID19 plasma as part of the national network coordinated by @JohnsHopkins https://health.ucsd.edu/news/releases/Pages/2020-07-09-does-blood-plasma-from-covid-19-survivors-help-patients-with-novel-coronavirus.aspx
/ "From a provider perspective, not only are you able to provide the same level of care but you’re able to do a better job of making sure your team is informed." says @BrettCMeyerMD about the @UCSDHealth inpatient telemedicine solutions https://healthtechmagazine.net/article/2020/07/virtual-rounding-supports-communication-during-pandemic
/ On the university front, @Harvard announced they will require students returning to campus to test for coronavirus every 3 days! https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/06/harvard-will-allow-some-students-on-campus-this-fall-so-long-as-they-take-coronavirus-tests-every-three-days.html
/ Planning for @UCSanDiego "Return to Learn" continues. “We will adjust what we do to what is happening,” Dr. Schooley says “We’ll have a continuous vision of what’s going on with our testing. And we believe information is a good way to make decisions.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/education/2020/07/05/covid-testing-colleges-race-campus-safe-reopen-fall/3283734001/
/ Finally, Dr. "Chip" Schooley and I are launching @UCSDHealth "COVID Grand Rounds" this summer! A series of 6 symposiums (Weds 7/22-8/26) will cover topics from vaccines to treatment controversies, starting with Dr. Judy Currier (ID Chief @UCLAHealth) - all streaming publicly.
