I am interested in building cases that are unassailable and transparent. Like so many others, I’m looking for the truth & not an outcome. And then layering evidence. And only then interviewing in a very straight forward no cop drama fashion. On camera. I really like this work.
Many people lie to me. I’d be disappointed if they didn’t. For me, I’ve found that never getting frustrated or even acting frustrated while talking to people works best, for me. Lock them in on their story, confirm it’s what they mean to say. And then peel it away...
For me I’d rather have evidence than a confession. We started with probable cause and then work towards peeling away reasonable doubt. Be curious & be kind. It’s the same side of the same coin as when I was on patrol, Except now I have time and I’m not riding car wrecks.
A big difference between me riding calls in my beat & me handling assigned cases is in the former, there’s always lots of drama but perhaps not a crime. My job is to figure it out & not make it worse. But as a detective, there’s always a crime. That’s why I get the case. But...
The approach is the same. Exactly the same. Just slower in some ways. Certainly quieter. Don’t assume I know anything. Be curious. Be respectful. Make all my mistakes mentally & internally before opening my mouth. And understand the limits of our authority & the point of it all
