At the level of an entire society there is no equity-efficiency tradeoff. Equitable economic and political institutions create growth and innovation. The whole economic agenda predicated on characterizing this tradeoff is at best a waste of time, at worst propaganda for the rich
Stop focusing on small picture stuff like whether there are disincentives to work if we give money to the poor, and focus on big picture stuff like the ways that economic and political dominance by the rich leads to less investment in education, health, innovation, good jobs
“Oh shit. If we don’t allow people to starve they might stay out of work for an extra 2 weeks. Let’s study that. The capture of our entire economic and political system by corporate elites and white supremacists? Probably not a big deal for efficiency”
