There are many levels of the game that Rugby needs to get right. It's instructive to ask (a) what do we NEED (b) what do we WANT and (c) what can we AFFORD. (1) https://twitter.com/Millsyrob/status/1281340381125382144
The Australian Club model has merit but is, for mine, a 'want'. The game needs a better pathway for talented players (not just 18-20 year olds) that is respected and utilised by the Super teams. NRC was closer to what we 'needed' but was only ever embraced by the Reds & Brums (2)
I'm unconvinced that this model is practical, and importantly, 'affordable' - given the current state of the Game. A game that needs to re-employ quality, passionate development officers to build the foundations for future survival, let alone growth (3)
A game that will rise & fall on the quality of coaching at all levels - a rising tide that will lift all boats. The long term decline in coach education in Austalia is stifling growth. There is a troubling dependence on e-learning to impart the many nuances of coaching. (4)
Something needs to change. Agreeable debate on these types of models, in good faith by all stakeholders, can achieve the right outcome. (5)
