Like I wrote in my column earlier this week, leagues need to answer this question: What needs to happen to play?
Better case numbers nationally?
A treatment that would further decrease mortality?
A vaccine?
“We need more time” isn’t a real answer. https://cbbcentral.com/2020/07/06/column-no-matter-when-we-play-please-have-a-plan/

We also have to determine what our primary concern is. Is it that players will get sick and have a bad outcome? Is it that players getting sick impacts the less healthy people? Is it that a season would simply be too messy and feel illegitimate? https://cbbcentral.com/2020/07/06/column-no-matter-when-we-play-please-have-a-plan/
Another thing to discuss: what does the student-athlete’s life look like without sports? Do they get to be on campus? Do they keep getting tested? Or are we sending them home to fend for themselves like in March? What’s best for them right now may involve being on campus.
All these things are far more complex than moving things back two weeks or two months or canceling it altogether. It requires leadership, hearing from student-athletes about what’s best for their physical AND mental health, and supporting them. Otherwise, we’re failing.
I just received Northwestern’s fall plan for students. It involves far more safety measures than I’d have at home. We know athletes get extra protocols on top of that. There may be a reason Pat Fitzgerald said his players feel the safest place for them is in the team facility.
