Here’s to another Talk Your Book Series per Joe Plumeri’s evergreen business principles

Today we’ll talk about how $DS measures as a mid-term growth model.
Principle 1: Vision ✅

Drive Shack is an Eatertainment venue-they’re aware of it

Ensure every moment is one to remember from the moment you enter to the moment you leave

They’re narrowing the gap - taking an exclusive sport and making it accessible and fun - welcoming all
Principle 2: Purpose ❌

Meaningful work defines human achievement - DS has the potential to narrow the exclusivity gap, to host high school golf teams, and to help communities build lasting friendships through leagues - which they host

DS staff are not taught to think this way.
Principle 3: Make a Big Deal Out of Everything ✅

When operating a service centric business the details count

In an age of Yelp reviews and social media - customer experience goes beyond entry and exit

DS has employs tech, relationship teams, and COVID relief to ensure safety
Principle 3: Continued ❌

With any new business the customer service can always improve. DS fails to allow reservations - their competitors do and DS’ consumers demand it

Some consumers have negative experiences w/ wait staff - COVID emphasizes importance of customer service
Principle 4: No Doors❌

Gauging from an investor perspective DS’ management team has put up imaginary doors

They communicate well - have ambitious goals and lofty projections but end up behind the mark

Ambition is admirable but execution is eventful.

I seek forward events.
Principle 5: Performance Based Culture ❌✅

General employees don’t receive SBC and so are not “Owner-Associates” - Quality of service

However - the chairman owns 12.8% of the company personally and bought during the COVID lows.

Other execs do not have significant ownership.
Principle 6: Widen the Value Gap ✅

I touched on this earlier - DS operates a business that narrows the exclusivity gap of golf and has the potential to bring communities together.

The importance remains in understanding what business you’re in and aligning employee vision
Principle 7: Your Reach Should Exceed Your Grasp ✅

Executives ambitious and understand that asking “what else” consistently differentiates over time

UrbanBox venues seek to exploit landlords with empty shopping malls and obtain prime locations to drive brand growth and margins
Principle 8: Surround Yourself w/People Who Want to Do Great Things❌

Burn the boat mentality is a necessity. DS cut staff and deferred spending to ensures a battle tomorrow.

Hana is ensuring there will be people to surround herself with - whether they are great is TBD.
Everything has a price.

Whether you believe that a exclusivity gap narrowing driving range and mini golf facility will resemble what bowling in the 1960s and the years to come is up to you.

At sub 100MM dollar valuation opportunities I will continue to take this bet.

End.
