Someone recently dissed me for building a business on Amazon. "Don't build a business on another company's platform!" That's great advice in theory, but in 2020 it's a lot easier to say that than to actually do it.

Here's why:
1. There's a duopoly in mobile app distribution (apple/android)
2. Almost every B2B Saas company is going to have to build its software on Google, Facebook, or Amazon cloud services and while that's better than having a single option. You're still their bitch.
3. Precoronavirus Amazon had 52% market share. Some dummies like @BenedictEvans (who apparently has blocked me) say "well they're only 11% of retail" but they're wrong. What's Amazon's marketshare in toys postcoronavirus: 80%? Consumer products for the most part runs through AMZN
If you don't want to run your shit through Amazon you can go the Shopify route, but Shopify IS A PLATFORM and it has a lot of investor expectations to squeeze its stores for more and more money to justify its massive valuation. If you wanna do WooCommerce you can, but you're
still going to be getting all your inbound customers either through Google or Facebook, which are "platforms".

There are certainly businesses out there that can be built profitably without a platform (think real estate, maybe cannabis, certain aspects of crypto) but you're still
subject to the flippancies of local government.

So here's my advice: if you're a first time entrepreneur. Forget all this bullshit. Just focus on building something that people want and that you can generate cash from. If you build a nice big business you can figure out how to
get off the platforms and uncuck yourself by Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos later.

If you're not a first time entrepreneur and you really have cut your teeth, maybe you want to be more selective, but, yeah, not necessary your first go around.

P.S.

Serious question: what has this man accomplished in his life?

he leached off two legit entrepreneurs ( @benhoro
and @pmarca) to build a newsletter which he took with him after he left @a16z.

What has he done? What has he built? AFAICT all of a16z's investments post his
hiring have sucked.
