Earlier this evening I had been invited to speak to the audience of people of East London, in a memorial organised by The Naz Foundation, and @SrebrenicaUK.
I had only one message to convey:
- The lesson of Srebrenica to the world is only one:
The genocide had happened before the very eyes of the world because world's mindset was such that they placed genocides and hatred far into the future, which is always skidding away, and thus the world stand blind to what is happening at the moment.
This is how Srebrenica happened. The world did not want to accept the hatred is happening in their own time, before their own eyes.
So, I said, we must stop this mindset, and realize that genocides are happening right now, in so many places around the globe.
Hatred is present. Crimes against humanity are present right now. Even if it is committed by "part of our own flock", it is still happening. If we continue assessing the risks of future genocides, ignoring the signs of it in the present, we failed Srebrenica. We failed the world.
Every action matters no matter how small one might think it is. The world is the best, the strongest and most beautiful in its diversity.
