1. This has been a pretty bad week to be on Twitter - at least the way I'm on Twitter. And for whatever reason, it feels like of late there are a lot more bad days, bad weeks, bad months on here than there are good ones.
2. So - and not that it really matters to anyone, but whatever - I'm going to pull back from this place. I'll still tweet about things that seem interesting/important. But the arguments, the futile battles, the attempts to defend: they're just wearing me out.
3. In Scorsese's Dylan documentary, Dylan talks about something Liam Clancy said to him: "Remember, Bob: No fear. No envy. No meanness." I've always liked the sound of that, thought of it as a great - if unreachable - idea of how to make your way through the world.
4. But this place increasingly (though maybe it's always been this way) feels like it feeds on the very things that Clancy told Dylan to move beyond: fear and stress and resentment and hostility. I don't like seeing it in other people, or in myself. So time to try something else.
