Systemic racism exists in Canada, but there are still many who don't understand what this means. Some are even personally offended by the idea.
But saying that " #SystemicRacism exists in Canada" is not the same as saying "all Canadians are bad people".

But saying that " #SystemicRacism exists in Canada" is not the same as saying "all Canadians are bad people".

We can see #SystemicRacism exists because outcomes are disproportionately negative for certain people when grouped by skin colour.
Systemic racism means that even the presence of "good people" cannot by itself overcome the disproportionately negative outcomes of the system. 2/

This 2015 @macleans article discusses some examples of what disproportionately negative outcomes exist here in Canada for Indigenous people because of #SystemicRacism. 3/ https://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/out-of-sight-out-of-mind-2/
Recent discussions about #SystemicRacism in policing have been particularly poignant. Black ppl make up 3.4% Canada pop, yet 9% of police fatalities. Indigenous ppl make up 4.8% Canada population, yet 15% of police fatalities, 1/3+ of victims shot by RCMP between 2007-2017. 4/
#SystemicRacism means that the issue isn't simply about determining whether or not an officer deliberately shot a person b/c of race. It's not about whether an individual police officer was a "good person" or not. Acknowledging systemic racism exists means recognizing that... 5/
...even if the police officer acted in good faith & legitimately felt mortally threatened & justified in firing their weapon, our societal systems are failing these Black & Indigenous ppl in a way that brings them to the business end of a gun at disproportionately high rates. 6/
