Academic epis and applied epis, a match made in grad school- A thread
If you’re an academic epi, you need an applied epi best friend. And if you are a #govEpi, especially at a state or local health department, you need an academic epi BFF. Mine are @DrSlaughter99 and @DrDaraMendez.
How is this relationship mutually beneficial? Well, #govEpis have all the data. Ok, maybe not all, but we have a ton of population health data right at our fingertips. We want to write 70 million papers from it, but most of our jobs don’t immediately value publishing.
Academic epis must publish or perish, can you see where I’m going with this? Working together, I can share research ideas with my academic friends that would have practical implications. I can analyze the data. Academic friends write in their sleep.
Academic friends have access to journals while most state and local #govEpis do not (SIDEBAR- Who reading this can help us change this?) and can help gov epis stay up-to-date with new research findings. This is truly a match made in heaven.
#GovEpis and applied epis in other settings, I also found that once you start publishing, your org will make space for you to continue. They often don’t realize they need you to publish until you start. Academic partnership also helps finding an IRB to submit to.
You can follow @EpiEllie.
