Here, where Black ppl are less than 1%, makes having convos about diversity-- & specifically including Black narratives, creators etc. into the equation-- a special kind of frustrating cause so many ppl here feel it's not worth the convo cause we're not *part of the demographic*
I remember one of my college teachers directly telling that my concerns didn't matter because I, "Wasn't really part of the demographic" to my face. Denying my existence, right to my face.
It makes conversations about bring more Black creators into animation frustrating because studios play the, "well there aren't Black creators around so we just don't end up hiring them" card and refuse to take further action about anything.
This just continues the cycle of leaving Black creators out cause you "can't find a way".
The thing is, there's always a way.
Black creators are HERE IN THE CITY.
You have to make a Call In for them.
It's not like we're not applying 4 these jobs.
We're just not being considered.
White ppl: "We don't want to tokenize Black ppl. We want to hire people for their skill level, not because of their race"
THE THING IS, it's always been skewed that we're not hired BECAUSE of our race, so we're gon have to make up the difference by hiring creators who are BLACK.
There's a gap that needs to be closed.
The gap that leaves Black folks not getting the experiences that their white-- & in Vancouver's case, East Asian folx-- counterparts get.
Calling In Black creators means specifically seeking us out.
Specifically investing and mentoring us.
And at the end of the day, it is NOT tokenizing us if you're genuinely interested in bridge building with Black creators and investing in Black creators.
It's not a hard concept.
But it takes empathy, and purposeful intentions and ACTION.
When ur in a position of power, u got to make the effort to see the gaps from the Top.
Recognize where Black people are held back systemically.
Make plans on how you're going to fill the gaps u see.
Include Black people IN THESE CONVERSATIONS as well (pay them for advising) etc.
