A thread on my favorite scene from the 4 devas arc of Gintama
So at this point in the arc Gintoki’s resolve has been completely broken by Jirochou. Jirochou had beat Gintoki in a fight and could have possibly killed Otose and in this scene Gintoki is planning to go fight Jirochou alone
and the thing I find the most interesting about this is that in this specific scene Gintoki is a reflection of Jirochou. Allow me to elaborate. So one of the main points of Jirochou’s character is that when Tatsugorou was killed he swore to protect the Kabukicho district.
But, by doing this he cut off all his relationships because he valued his duty above all else. This led to him living a life that allowed him to effectively protect Kabukicho but at the cost of not being a able to create close relationships with the people around him like Pirako.
Now this relates to Gintoki because in this scene he is also trying to protect Kabukicho as well as his friends but, he is doing this by cutting off the people close to him just like Jirochou did. But, because Kagura and Shinpachi genuinely care about him they remind him that a
source of his strength comes from the people Gintoki is close to and by doing this Gintoki becomes an evolved form of Jirochou. Instead of being some who see’s human connection and relationships as a distraction from ones duty, Gintoki views these things as empowerment for
him to serve his duty while also living a fulfilling life, and by becoming an evolved form of Jirochou, Gintoki is able to show Jirochou that there is a more fulfilling way to live while still trying to protect and because of this Jirochou is able to change as a person.
In my opinion this is the most important scene in four devas because it elevates Gintoki and the themes of the arc to an massive extent and allows all the big moments later in the arc to have a great payoff.
