DIY - do it yourself.
With the surge of new infections, the goverment machinery is no longer coping with contact tracing. So folks, you may have to do contract tracing yourselves, 'it's in your hands' right? (1/10)
If you're diagnosed of Covid-19, identify the point at which you developed symptoms. Now go back three days, and list all the people you met in that period. Why? This is because viral shedding, and spread of infections, typically starts 2-3 days before the onset of symptoms.
Then list all the people you met from the point you developed symptoms to the point you got your results. The assumption is that you would have gone into self-quarantine the moment you developed symptoms, but yes if you thought it was a 'little flu' you probably did not.
Now that you have a line list of contacts, call each person, notify them of your diagnosis, and the potential for them to have been exposed. Make sure you complete this task within 24 hours of your diagnosis. Why? Anyone who is exposed may become infectious 3 days after exposure.
There is a 'window period' of up to 3 days from the point of contact - latent phase. After that, about 2 days during which you can infect others, but with no symptoms yet - presymptomatic phase. This is one reason all contacts must self-quarantine, even when they are not sick.
Some people will go on to have symptoms, others will have only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Will be great if we could test all contacts, but we don't have that much testing capacity. So, if they get mild symptoms, and cannot test, they stay isolated for 14 days.
They can also stay isolated for at least 7 days after your symptoms go away. If they have no symptoms, eish, this is tricky. They may or may not have Covid-19, we don't know. It's best to stay under self-quarantine for 14 days. If gotta move around, follow strict precautions.
If they feel sick, they need to get tested, and follow strict precautions at all times. It helps to wear a mask all the time, even when at home. Why? So they don't touch their face, even if they forget. Best to get all household members to wear masks as well. Mistakes can happen.
Even after diagnosis, and can isolate at home, same process in my humble opinion. Also keep the house well-ventilated, and clean surfaces at least three to four times a day, and certainly every time after use if fed up of staying in the room. Don't know how easy though...
So, draw up your own line list, reach out to your own contacts and inform them. It's the right thing to do. They'll panic, so be ready to educate and support them, and they will also give you support. It's easier to do this when you've been taking precautions, so do take care!
