Okay, 10 bldgs that I love, but I’m staying on brand & listing (mostly) social hsg projects; in no particular order:
Hugo Häring’s bldgs at Berlin’s Siemensstadt, 1934, w/ their varied brick detailing & round garden balconies, an elegant & efficient countersubject to Gropius’s austerity
Greg Ain’s Dunsmuir Ave flats, 1939, LA’s answer to Oud’s Weissenhof rowhouses, linking European pre-war modernism & midcentury California style (also down the rd from my place)
Giuseppe Terragni’s exquisite Giuliani Frigerio apts in Como, 1940, sumptuous rationalism nestled in pollarded mulberry trees - I used to walk by this beauty every day on my way to studio
Neave Brown's Dunboyne Rd in Camden: I'll admit I love the English post-war megaprojects too but these more intimate spaces lined w/ lush terraced gardens are irresistible
Aldo Rossi’s perfect Gallaratese hsg outside Milano: rigorous, sensitive, evocative, almost mystical, & deeply humanistic - & sadly impossible to visit (I learned)
Álvaro Siza’s SAAL da Bouça project in Porto - characteristically austere but not w/o warmth & energy - & I love the wink to Taut
Gino Valle’s gorgeous IACP hsg on the Giudecca, w/ careful detailing & subtly done massing that cascades from canal front to gardens
Émile Aillaud’s weird & delightful les Courtillières project in Pantin, all sinuous radii & shifting colors, at once homage & critique of the Hufeisensiedlung
Herman Hertzberger’s experimental Diagoon hsg in Delft: interlocking spaces designed to be flexible, adaptable, & expandable - never quite realized
Alexander Gorlin's Boston Rd supportive hsg in the south Bronx - simple, refined, & still playful, offers dignity to its residents & a certain friendliness to the neighborhood
I'll point out this normie list is badly eurocentric, & all (white) men, & there is of course excellent social hsg by Rosemary Stjernstedt, Kate Macintosh, Anne Lacaton, Christelle Avenier, Angie Brooks, (ahem) Julie Eizenberg & so many others ...
