Let's talk templates...

A thread
As we all know, templates have been a thing in the sporting apparel industry for some time. Let us start by looking at what is a template and why they exist?
For me, a templated design only refers to the jersey base style: the blank shirt before any colour, graphic or trims are added. A modern day example of the is the new MLS 25 range of kits. All using the same base, or template, with individual colour and graphics.
The reason they exist are simple: it is more efficient and cost effective at both the design and factory levels.

Rather than having to design/develop bespoke collars, cuffs etc every time, a brand could develop, 5 of each, meaning a saving in design, dev and production costs.
Now this is where it gets interesting. Every brand that has over a handful of assets uses templates. Some are seen as great, some hated.

What makes it noticeable? When does it go too far? It seems to be when the base overshadows individuality and when a design is used too much.
The 2018 adidas Condivo design was used across multiple teams with only colours changing, this also had an engineered fabric that was locked into the base style. This mean't no individual graphics (also true with top level Nike 2016). Here the base style outweighed individuality.
This year Nike are are implementing 65 possible options between logo position, sleeve cut, collar and cuffs in their system. This lets the individuality of a club or federation can sing whilst still getting the financial benefits at a design and factory level. Individuality wins.
I'll finish up with a question.

If you agree with what I've said so far, why is the adidas EQT base style so loved? Is it nostalgia? Is it because we know the possibilities now and want more bespoke designs by default?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.
