Per discussion with another China Matt, I was wondering, how many non-white/non-Asian Asia area journalists and scholars are there? I had black and brown classmates when I studied Mandarin twenty years ago, but where are their peers today? Does interest stop at undergrad, or …
… is Asia studies postgrad work economically prohibitive for many black and brown students to pursue compared to business, or are those scholars being pushed towards African and Latin American studies instead of Asia (much the same way Asians are pushed towards Asia studies)?
Lastly, has anyone made a list of black and brown scholars and journalists who write about Asia?
