I think we can agree "cancel culture" is largely a boogeyman for the rich and powerful who think it should be illegal for the serfs to criticize them, AND acknowledge that for marginalized people it can often mean ACTUAL loss of livelihood/community/death. I think we can do both.
Like this is just one more example of how reality does not work the same for everyone.

Rich/powerful/famous people (yes, mostly white allocishet neurotypicals) live in one world with one set of (often nonexistent) consequences - marginalized people live in quite another.
Really, saying there are never meaningful repercussions for "cancel culture" is one of those sayings like "everyone has the same 24 hours as [BADASS PERSON]."

In many cases it's technically correct, but lacks a whole lot of nuance and doesn't account for marginalized folks.
And I think a major problem here is that "we" (LBR mostly it's people who really AREN'T effected by cancellation) so often conflate "cancel culture" with "actual targeted abuse and harassment."

I HATE that they're coming to mean the same thing, at least to mainstream media.
I know what it's like - "triggered."

Once (and still) a legitimate term used by doctors (and, yanno, mentally ill and disabled people) to describe the onset of symptoms caused by a specific stimulus, now the internet thinks it means "someone I don't like being angry, mock them!"
"Cancel culture" is a separate thing (or at least an inaccurate decription) of marginalized folks rightly calling OUT the rich/powerful.

It is not mass attacks ON marginalized people, which can do severe damage.

The fact that they're conflated is a real problem.
So yeah, messy subject, lots of nuance - which I KNOW WE HAVE, but goddamn, so many people screaming about Cancellation do NOT HAVE THE RANGE.

I don't think it's too complex to grasp. Throw a rock at someone wearing a suit of armor, or someone naked, *it does different things.*
And if you throw that rock at someone in a suit of armor who's currently stomping on your face, THEY DON'T GET TO SCREAM ABOUT HOW MEAN YOU'RE BEING - but that's what's happening right now.

Anyway. Shit's fucked.
Good morning; I see a lot of great points and a lot of folks who can't be bothered to read past the "AND" in the... first tweet. Point proven. 🙃
