A young black teacher from Tottenham told me that well-meaning teachers wanted to give their black students an inspiring role model so they invited David Lammy into school to speak. This teacher told me the kids were unimpressed with his story about being friends with Obama...
while some of the teachers were oblivious to the fact it wasn't cutting through, he asked the kids who they would have rather had in. After Ronaldo, they decided that they wanted Adele as she's "from Tottenham and didn't change the way she speaks when she made it".
And by "he", I mean this teacher who I was speaking to. It is just interesting how so often people think they know what other people want to hear, and what they will connect with, but they very rarely stop to listen.
And I tweet this not to contribute to the all-or-nothing, you're-wrong-I'm-right mentality on here, it is just to say that sometimes things will surprise you and you have to be open to other people's feelings and experiences. It's all about nuance.
Also, when all else fails, Adele and songs about heartbreak is one thing that we can collectively get behind.
