The story is definitely driven by its incredible cast of characters. Kenzo Tenma goes on a difficult path to undo his mistakes, and represents humanity’s righteousness. His morals are tested time and again, while he tries to prove his philosophy right, that all lives are equal.
Wolfgang Grimmer, might be one of the most likeable characters in all anime. He’s a man on a journey to uncover is past, to better understand himself as a person, to blend in with everyone. A mixture of compassion and nihilism, his internal conflicts are the cause of his actions.
Johan Liebert, one of, if not the, best villains in anime. Representing humanity’s nihilism, Johan goes walks down a dark pathway to prove his only point: life is meaningless, only death is certain. He is the perfect evil to Tenma’s goodness, challenging his beliefs till the end.
Heinrich Lunge, along with Eva Heinemann have arguably the best character development in the story. Lunge is an egotistical workaholic with a dysfunctional family. His prinicples are tested as he chases down Tenma, uncovering things that completely change his way of thinking.
After suffering from a few traumatic events, Eva Heinemann sets out to find her true self. She’s initially very egotistic and narcissistic. With the progression of the story, she meets people who she connects with. Her perspective on life gradually changes, maybe for the better.
Nina Fortner and Dieter. Nina embarks on her own journey to uncover her dark, forgotten past. She wants to end Tenma’s suffering by settling the matter with Johan herslef. Dieter carries Tenma’s ideologies of virtue, hope. He is the only thing preventing Nina from losing her mind.
