This week I'll be walking (and sporadically live tweeting) the 66 miles of the #VanguardWay
Day 1 and I'm at the start of the walk that is the excitement of East Croydon station
The first signpost for the Vanguard Way, and I don't even think it's pointing the right direction
One day I'll ride @TramsLondon all the way to the end
This is a nice lamppost
Apparently Surrey is a Go Roam destination @ThreeUK
Correction, I'm still in Croydon
Here's where the Vanguard Way meets the London Loop. I completed the loop earlier this year, having walked this section in 2018
🎵 Friends forever, we're gonna be friends forever 🎵
Goodbye London Loop
(Also, I'm definitely in Surrey now)
That's the end of section 1 of the guidebook. Onto section 2...
Clouds looking ominous
First stile of the day
Time for lunch. Here's my view
Hello new friend #GreenwichMeridianTrail
Hello M25
After 17.5km of walking, time to turn off the Vanguard Way and head into Oxted to find my car. Day 1 done.
Day 2 of walking the Vanguard Way. The sun is out and we start off following the North Downs Way (and the M25)
Crossing the Greenwich Meridian line
Crossing the M25
Just saw a deer in Loampit Wood. He ran too fast to get a photo. Plus I was eating a banana
Section 2 of the guidebook done. Two more sections to walk today. Could be a long day
Another trig point to tick off the list (can't actually get any closer)
I'm now in Kent if anyone was keeping track
Section 3 done. That wasn't so bad. Although section 4 is the long one for today
Saw a newt (or possibly a lizard) run across the path in front of me. Again, too fast to get a photo
A wild pokemon appeared!
Trig point number 2
After a speedy couple of km to Forest Row, I've made it in time to catch the bus. 28.5km of walking today. Day 3 done.
(Just realised this was actually only day 2 😩)
Day 3 of walking the Vanguard Way and I'm back in Forest Row. It's not raining right now, but it looks like it could any minute
Still on track
Today's trig point
According to the guidebook, I've passed the halfway point! 33 miles done, 33 miles to go. I'm not sure of the exact spot but it looked something like this
And that's day 3 done. Another (almost) 20km walked. Two more days to go...
There wasn't as much to tweet about today (it was a bit drizzley), but here's my favourite photo
Day 4. Another grey day and feeling tired. Good news is that its only two days and around 42km left to go
Section 6 of the guidebook complete. Taking a short break in Blackboys to eat my (well past its best) banana
Drizzle
Which way to Footpath?
I'd love to meet the farmers and discuss why they choose which crop and their seed-planting strategies
So much green!
I've made it to Berwick station, the end of today's windy walk. Final day tomorrow: the South Downs and the sea!
And here's the watch photo for day 4
Final day of walking the Vanguard Way! The sun is finally out again! Only 20km to go...
Much better weather today
The South Downs Way. A walk for another day (although I am following part of it just now)
87 steps
Another 131 steps (although guidebook says 152)
The sea!
Today's lunchtime view
These views make all the walking worth it
Ice-cream time!
(Just 3km to go...)
And today's walk is done! 21km which brings me to...
Newhaven Harbour Station and the end of the Vanguard Way! Thanks for following! End of thread.
