I truly hope and pray that the young creatives in Zim HipHop like ASAPH RPeels Crooger Union 5 Obi David’s Denim woods etc don’t make the same mistakes a lot of the rappers from our generation made. Getting the business right is great but creating consistently is important too
I spent a lot of time over thinking releases and holding back songs cos I wanted things to be right or because there was a pitch to some corporate sponsor/label that the release completely depended on and before I knew it so much time had passed by with very little productivity
Im not alone in this respect. I cant count the amount of music I’ve heard from my peers that never came out for this and many other reasons that are ultimately irrelevant now. Content is king and if we are to expect the public to support our movement we have to give them a reason
It’s a numbers game ultimately and unfortunately not every song is going to pop off and not every artist pushing is going to catch a break but you can be assured that the more music you put out there the more oppurtunities there are for people to hear and like you so make music !
Collaborate with your peers more and tell the stories of your varying realities no matter where you are from. Go outside your comfort zones, work with people you wouldn’t typically work with. The more that you all collaborate the more you increase your listenership as a culture
Also the radio doesnt make you. Its great but for the most part Dj nhingi is governed by public demand. Create your following online and make it so they cant ignore. If we solely depend on radio spins for Zim to know how dope our HipHop is then we are going nowhere fast fam
And don’t place too much importance on that BIG collaboration you think you need. That’s not likely to give you the results you imagine it can. And besides that, you should want to get to a point where that big collaboration is as much an honor for you as it is for the other guy
We have seen many instances where nhingi is pissed at nhingi for not tweeting the collab they did and this is usually coz bigger nhingi probably did the collab for a cheque or as a favor then now you are sat there feeling slighted cos you didn’t get the traction you had expected
I could go on forever cos there is so much we didn’t know when we started and yes this ain’t news to a lot of people now which is encouraging but I know even if one person sees and heeds this advice as opposed to going the other way then the typing was worth it. I will stop here
