Apropos of nothing, I'm compiling a Journalese to English dictionary. As editors are often responsible for these clichés (while journalists get blamed for them), fellow editors are welcome to contribute. Here we go:
1. Illicit (adj.) - Illegal but I can't prove it, or not illegal and I haven't tried to prove it. Either way, I can't afford the libel case.
2. Storied (adj.) - Applied to individuals with illicit pasts, hence the same concerns apply
3. Controversial (adj.) - Applied to individuals with both storied and illicit pasts, see "storied" and "illicit"
4. Forgotten (adj.) - A place I think I'm the first person to have discovered, despite interviewing people who live here for my feature story
5. Unprecedented (adj.) - I hadn't heard of anything like this happening before, therefore it never has
6. Scandalous (adj.) - Something two opinion columnists agree to have become a scandal (noun)
