The rhetoric of disadvantaged becoming more disadvantaged through loss of learning is a dangerous one. You voice the same message often enough and people internalise it. Get the children into school safely and close the gaps for ALL as we would normally do.
Attendance needs to be prioritised. Supportive measures that can be started now and continued over the summer (dependant on your pastoral working hrs).
Your pastoral team are vital in September (as they always are). The systems you have in place to support pupils academically are key. Ensuring that meetings and support are offered around lesson time not instead of.
Above all, culture is key.Ensuring that all staff are aligned to your culture and reminded of your culture is critical. Do this now if you can.Rehearsing expectations and re-establishing the norm.If your leaders are on point, your Sept en mass start will be much more streamlined.
Re-establishing your culture with pupils is an investment that will pay dividends. Children are more responsive and malleable in comparison to some adults. Your norms of rules, routines and rewards need to be paramount.
The harder you work when all pupils are back and break September, the easier you will find the rest of the year.
Back to attendance....an unknown to everyone as we don't have comparative data (post lockdown). I just hope that the govt etc start to be consistent in the messages that education is vital for all and then we may have a sporting chance.
