1/6 Important, in my view, to underline what’s going on here:
• USA has no major global stake in 5G
• Get one: supress Huawei chip supply
• This forces UK Gov to assess impact
= UK policy is being dictated by Trump administration. European Parliament replaced by White House?
2/6 Given #US has consistently failed to provide evidence to back up endless spurious allegations - which clearly few, incl the U.K, were prepared to listen to - they’ve resorted to threatening to cut off Huawei’s supply chain...
FACT: This isn’t about security. It’s about $$$$
3/6 In January, Boris Johnson rightly approved the use of #Huawei equipment to help roll out 5G in the UK. He did so because having 3 major players in the market is better than 2:
• More secure ✅
• Competitive market ✅
• Foster innovation ✅
• Consumer benefits ✅
4/6 The reason #Huawei is the global leader in 5G + mobile phones because it invests billions in R&D. The #US fell asleep at the 5G wheel years ago & they’re fighting to claw back market position. Huawei did it organically, the US may just try to buy Finland, or perhaps Nokia...
5/6 Huawei’s been in the U.K. for 20 yrs. In that time, we’ve helped BT, Vodafone & others roll out 3G, 4G & broadband. Our equipment has already helped telecom providers drive the U.K. to become a 5G global leader. Restricting Huawei will do little to maintain that leadership
6/6 Shouldn’t the US respect a United Kingdom in the post-Brexit era being in a position to chose its own telecommunication strategy?
On #Huawei right now, the Trump administration wants to call the shots....
