Some features of Status Driven Societies (as opposed to Wealth Driven Societies)

1. A society that’s focused on status over wealth is likely to be ungrateful to each other as thanking privately or publicly feels lowering of their status.

2. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven), explaining decisions downstream feels like a weakness and thus creates a less collaborative society.

3. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven), plagiarism is usually rampant because giving credit to someone for their thought or work is perceived as reducing own status.

4. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven) making someone wait is considered to be a sign of superior status and often practiced by all levels, resulting in a less professional society.

5. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven), disagreement is considered as disrespect and eventually leads the society to become hypocritical.

6. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven) businesses are treated and scaled like empires. Failures are never celebrated and dreaded.

Concept of serial entrepreneurship is thus very rare in these societies.

7. In a status driven society (versus wealth driven) any rejection, romantic or professional, is taken poorly and is perceived as an attack to the receivers ego.

Hence people often avoid being direct and simply choose the easy path of “ghosting” to avoid conflict.

8. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven), members often engage in reducing status of others by shaming/mocking them or finding their mistakes, as a way to elevate their own status.

9. In status driven societies (versus wealth), it’s easier to underpay someone at workplaces if you give them a fancy designation, a uniform to wear, tons of certificates or applause, etc.

10. Societies that are status driven (versus wealth driven) train their children to behave well using shaming techniques and making them fear opinion of others.

11. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven), sales is considered a lower status function (unless you are a manager) and brokers of any form are looked down upon.

These societies remain poorer on persuasion as a skill as persuading feels like a low status action.

12. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven) violence that punctures social status maybe more prevalent.

Slaps are common in Bollywood and missing in Hollywood.

Throwing something damaging at face out of rejection or shaming is also missing in wealth driven societies

13. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven) products and people that increases one’s status are overpaid and products and people that doesn’t increase one’s status are underpaid or even exploited.

14. In a status driven society (versus wealth driven) people often consider benefit to others around them comes from their heroic self-sacrifice versus self-fulfillment.

Sacrificial actions done in these societies are very lucrative as they are often status driven.

15. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven), fear of failure is acute as failures are perceived as steep decline of status.

This fear usually manifests into a low risk taking and inert society.

16. In status driven societies (versus wealth driven) saying no to someone senior requesting a task is considered as a sign of disrespect.

This results in these societies becoming a perpetual “follow-up” culture.
