I've got lots of thoughts on the pubs opening. Personally in normal times I use pubs a lot, and I rarely drink alcohol and I never go 'out out'. People use pubs for a variety of reasons, and many use them in responsible ways. 1/8
On Friday I went to the woods for a pack walk with friends. In normal times, we'd use the bathrooms at pub then sit in the beer garden for a coke and food. We aren't rushed and there's plenty of space for assistance dogs (I find pub staff are ace with guide dogs) 2/8
Not having toilets open has been a huge disability issue. It's meant I have been trapped in my town within a 20 min radius of my house until yesterday. @CrohnsColitisUK has run a campaign to reopen toilets. Women who Endometriosis need toilets too @EndometriosisUK 3/8
I often use pubs as a halfway point to meet friends and family. I often use pubs as somewhere to work or wait between appointments. People use them to stay warm, access WiFi and free or cheap coffee refills. 4/8
Many people rely on pubs for th community. As the daughter of a large alcoholic, I see the need for pubs. They mean people are not completely socially isolated. They have people to check on them. They have company. 5/8
The pubs I know have spent a fortune on implementing the covid compliant measures and have had a heart breaking few months. This isn't a zero sum game and many of the "stay the f🤬🤬k" home crew have privilege, and jobs that pay a monthly secure wage. 6/8
Personally? There's at least 2 occasions this coming week where I'll be using a pub as a bathroom/ soft drink break whilst out walking with friends. I'm also having tea at least one night with my mum at a pub who've completely redesigned their premises to comply. 7/8
If you want to stay home: stay home. I'm going to continue being careful and sensible whilst keeping good mental health and seeing my loved ones. Follow @JennyAThatcher for pub sociology 8/8
