Looking through #SecondWave, from massive Pride rallies to 'revellers' in Soho, it looks as if there are swathes of the public who are now sanguine about a disease they didn't know about last year which has killed 500,000+. This isn't a judgement - I went to a party last night.
As a middle-aged male I'm in an elevated risk group. As an informed person I'm aware of the impact of social distancing, while no longer practicing it. I have 2 friends who've had Covid. It's interesting how our risk perspective changes as familiarity with a danger grows.
There is no great insight or argument here. It's just how it is, for many of us. We just don't tweet about it much. Those of us who know Covid is real & deadly, not a hoax, but put ourselves & potentially others at risk.

A bit like driving, really.
Risk & how we calculate it is endlessly fascinating. I remember being terrified of flying for a time, despite knowing what we know.

Anyway, count me among the #COVIDIOTS but it was a great party & if I'm still healthy, I'll go to the next one.
Cue incoming condemnation.
Cue arguments in response to one I am not making.
Cue signs of the cognitive phenomenon I think is more interesting - the urge we all share to be a public commentator & an unappointed, unqualified judge & jury over ordinary people.
Cue people who smoke getting cross about me not baying for the blood of people who went out for a drink last night.
Cue people who think that describing things as they are, for me & many others, is advocating for not controlling the spread of Covid-19.

I think we're mostly very bad at controlling risk. I smoked for 30 years. I never advocated for tobacco use. It's just how it was.
I have a slightly off the wall theory that being furious on Twitter may have more grave longterm health consequences than Covid-19. But there'll be no Daily Briefing on that.

So, have a lovely Sunday & let's hope I don't fall ill or cause anyone else to.

Peace out.
Another interesting Twitter phenomenon is 'implication hypervigilence' (copyright @accessjames).

This will probably mean some people thinking I'm therefore excusing the shit show of the UK government handling of this pandemic 🤷🏻‍♂️
