I need to rant, but I allow myself 2 rants a year. it's not been six months yet.
Also, I'm so angry, I'll say things that 'll get me trolled for years. Even if they are true n right.
I needed very little encouragement - so given myself a moment to calm down (a rule in life-never act in anger. Show anger, but act after calming down) and am going to spew here, a bit.
Apologies in advance- but this goes ...ah
SO one thing I am good at is frugal renovation of houses. Have done this for years in 3 countries.

IMPOSSIBLE to get anything done in India.

Skills are rubbish!!
(I want you to win India, it's not happening!)
So of course the lockdown opens, n washing machine broke, and got a new one - needed it plumbed.

I have had new plumbing installed in 3 countries. Neat, clean, 3 hours in and out!!

In India - 3rd day running, 5 ppl!!!
I did want to give jobs to local plumbers etc. They've been with us for repairs etc. and they have first right of employment.
But the best of them are so useless!!!

q is why?
1. Patriarchy

They will not listen to women.

I actually studied construction, have trained under master painters who used to paint Ken Palace (or so they said, they were our neighbours a few roads away).
I know my construction - have done 4-5 projects large ones.
If I say I want it done this way, I know what I am saying. I bring training, global knowledge, experience and technical skills to what I am instructing - not just in education policy but also here.

Remember, women apply for a job only when 100% sure.
I know before I speak
But they are so stuck in their old ways, that they cannot even see it differently!

Three days ago, I asked them to buy a specific valve - today, sent them out again on a hunt for it. Because they will not listen to 'bhabhi'.

Why is it not totally their fault?
2. Resources (I'll do training last)

Only mediocre, mass produced items are available in hardware shops. I am a business professional too, I would advise this as best use of their working capital too. It's frugal, cutting edge cash management.
But it means, no supplies if
you need something that is not run of the mill.

You will not find a socket with a low profile, unless you import it from china. You will not find a specific spanner, unless you import it from Germany.

Heck, even my fav brooms with min backache were brought from London
when I moved here ten years ago.
People mocked me for bringing my bin liners and pocha from there - and my suitcases were full of basics from there each trip. (All cheap, within customs rules)

Why?
Because everyday life here disrespects the worker - esp worker woman.
We outsource the basics of jharoo pocha bathroom cleaning installing washing machine repairing a tap valve leak - and we MAKE DO with inferior tools

Tools make a country! If you do not have brilliant tools you cannot achieve quality. In anything.

Do and demand better!
I am sick of mediocrity. I am sick of inferior products around me that cost me more!

This is not what we want for the future - we have to do better.
Take pride in our work, workmanship and tools.
Lazy times are over, fight for better.
Chalta hai, we used to hear of India!

That is an insult.
The only way to change it is to do better in delivering quality.

Today - I can rant on and on
It is taking 5 people 3 days to do a job that I have got done in the US and the UK in 45 mins to max 2 hours with 2 ppl.
Cost? It costs me 5 times as much in India.
Quality: It looks rubbish here-no finishing, bad materials, bad tools, bad skills.
Why do we choose to live so?

Can we not do better?

I say this with love for India, knowing it needs this boost in standards to stand out.
And I am tired of compromising - and saying chalo bhaiyya, koi baat nahin.
Sorry, and thank you.

If not for you'll to hold me up, I would not have been able to handle today.

The pipe installation was the last straw on this camel's back - everyone has a meltdown inthe lockdown, right?
But finally: Quality, Training, Skills.
Get brilliant tools to people. Build for customer choice.

Get rid of being ok with mediocrity.

Use every inch of life, breath, space - everything to make it better.
One Life.
