I didn't have the bandwidth to address this when I first read it even though it upset me. I would like to address it now.
@jkenney may think that he says some of the 'right things" re #racism. But his actions speak louder than his words. /1 https://calgaryherald.com/opinion/columnists/kenney-lets-acknowledge-past-evils-and-work-for-a-united-future/wcm/a480412f-4372-4730-9801-fd6caa8280ca/

There are so many examples of how he has upheld the systemic racism that he claims to want to work on as recently as refusing to fire his overtly racist speech writer, Paul Bunner & calling Canada Day Dominion Day 4 days ago. Bill 1 is #racist. There are many other examples. /2
Saying "no government program or policy can remove malice from someone’s heart" is untrue. Gov'ts lead by example. So if your gov't refuses to actually SEE how your govt strengthens #racism, /3
and touts multiculturalism and diversity, without working on anti-racism and authentic safety & belonging for #BIPOC, then you are doing something WORSE than not removing malice- you are CONDONING this malice. /4
To describe racism as:
"a sickness of the soul, a stain on humanity", while true, also affirms to many that racism is only the abhorrent, extreme acts of racial violence or terror- an obviously binary (yes/no) remark on character. It marginalizes racism by making it seem like /5

extreme events only. It'll let some think that the more subconscious, subtle & subversive ways that racism harms daily isn't racism. It lets ppl off the hook from thinking that they are complicit & contributing. It leads to ppl saying things to me like "go back to your country"/6
b/c I'm not white, or "your English is goood", or "where are you really from" in daily interactions. It means that ppl see racialized ppl like me on national TV, think that they have the safety to write derogatory, racist emails to that person w the msg that they don't belong /7
in a group and no-one speaks up to denounce the racist comment, it means that BIPOC are instantly judged against a stereotype at first glance (and if they don't meet that stereotype..watch out!), it means some racialized ppl are automatically being seen as violent/to be feared/8
due to pervasive incorrect prejudices of their racial group.
It means that racialized ppl are not seem as individuals, not worthy of getting names right, & instead are seen as monoliths- "you people", I thought I was talking to the other [person in your racial group]", /9

or "you all look the same". Making racism a sickness of the soul will disable ppl fr reflecting on how their own biases confirmed in society lead to interpersonal racism that they have actioned. By thinking racism=extremism, it will prevent ppl from looking inside themselves./10
Complicity in racism is pervasive-we all have been.
Even those who are victims of it, incl me.
We can't improve until we admit it.
Signalling racism is pathological [only] let's you think you're off the hook. Wrong, @jasonkenney. And you let many others off the hook by doing so.

7B/ ...it means that at any moment, any BIPOC can be demeaned with just a few words..[this got missed!]
