These are divisive times.

Perhaps worse,

Nobody can hear out the other side.

One of the major reasons why is something called

Confirmation bias.

Today's thread won't cover anything controversial,

But it will explain why people are so fixed in mindset.
A common theme of what I talk about

is the internet's influence on us.

I had a brief conversation with @ScottStemple3 about it.

I think that the internet is why we suck at dialogue now.
The internet holds every possible opinion known to man.

It is RIDICULOUSLY easy to find someone/some statistic

That fits your argument.

Plus, the internet is primarily a "free" resource.

There's no limit on who can upload content to it.

You, me, anyone.
Just because I write,

"Research says exercise actually kills you!"

And put it on an attractive looking website

Does that make it true?

No.

But anyone can "cite" this as "fact."
As the internet has expanded,

Our ability to critically reason has diminished.

It is much easier to seek out what we "already know",

And seek out things to prove what we believe,

Than to challenge ourselves.

This will end up destroying you.
Maybe not physically, no.

But spiritually.

You can easily spend 4 years scrolling through the internet,

And changing nothing about yourself.

Learn to use the internet as a proper resource.

Control it.

Or it will control you.
My suggestion?

For anything you believe,

Seek out the opposite perspective.

Balance what you believe against the "opposition."

Then test it for yourself.

Think on it.
It is way too easy to get caught up in an echo chamber online.

Think on your communities right now.

Are you in one?

Do you believe what you believe,

Because you want to believe it?
The person who can observe everything, without committal to anything,

is the person who is most free to make their own choices.

"Freedom" is a buzzword here, right?

I don't care how much money you make.

You're not free until you think for yourself.
