Chairman: As the Duke & Duchess of Sussex stepped down as patrons Aug 2019, in future TRF will focus on conservation, early years, mental health, & the early responders’ community. 3 programs have transitioned to independent charities: The Endeavour Fund, Coach Core, & Travalyst.
Trustees Report: In 2019, the Royal Foundation’s charitable expenditure was incurred across its core focus areas: Conservation, Mental Health, ‘Supporting Those Who Serve’, Early Years, Young People and Empowering Communities, with an additional grant made to Sussex Royal.
TRF provided financial & operational support for the Sussex’s projects during the transition to setup their own nonprofit. Two of H&M’s legacy programs, Empowering Communities (Hubb/Al Manaar) & Full Effect, will see management of their grants remain with TRF.
An unrestricted grant of £145K was awarded to facilitate the setup of Sussex Royal Foundation (SRF). H&M have since shut down SRF & it has entered a period of ‘solvent liquidation’. All assets will be transferred to the independent #Travalyst nonprofit. https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a33129717/prince-harry-meghan-markle-sussex-royal-charity-shut-down/
50% of the net income from The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund will be donated to SRF in perpetuity. With the subsequent shuttering of SRF, their share will be donated to another charity of The #DukeOfSussex’s choosing. In 2019, TRF received £21K from the memorial fund.
Staff costs increased 20% w/ new roles created late 2018 to support new programs. With the restructure, some roles were made redundant in 2019. Several notable departures included: CEO Lorraine Heggessey, Dir Natalie Campbell, Head of Comm’s James Holt, Dir Finance, & 2 Trustees.
#Travalyst is dedicated to educating people to help them make more sustainable travel choices that “best support the destinations they’re visiting, incl local communities, wildlife,& the environment”. The 6 member Travalyst Advisory Group formed in Feb w/ Dr. Sally Uren as Chair.
Feb 26th, #Travalyst & @VisitScotland co-hosted a summit to unveil draft sustainability frameworks to serve as a scorecard for sustainability practices across the industry. The 1st 3 frameworks: accommodation, aviation,& experiences were well received by travel service providers.
Heather Wong & James Holt are leading the UK #Travalyst office. They’re working to understand how Travalyst can “aid in global recovery” from COVID19 which decimated the travel & tourism industries. This shifted focus from the pilot previously planned for 2020.
Mental Health: Shout recruited & trained 2000 volunteers who have had 300K+ text conversations. Demand has increased 20% since the lockdown. After 3 years, #HeadFIT Harry’s mental fitness training partnership w/ the Ministry of Defence was fast tracked from pilot to April launch.
Supporting Those Who Serve: The Endeavour Fund (EF) awarded 12 grants totaling £223K. In June, EF was transferred to @WeAreInvictus remaining under David Wiseman’s leadership. He’s charged with expanding EF’s activities to support int’l wounded, injured, & sick service members.
The CASEVAC Club supports vets wounded in combat in Afghanistan/Iraq. They are a partner in the establishment of The Centre For Conflict Wound Research. For VE Day, current members met w/ WW2 predecessors from The Guinea Pig Club. CASEVAC is being transitioned out of TRF in 2020.
Young People: @WeAreCoachCore launched 7 new projects across the UK. To date, 550 young people have graduated the apprenticeship & coaching program across 14 cities. In April, the program including 3 TRF staff were transferred to the independent nonprofit Coach Core Foundation.
Harry announced a new partnership btwn Full Effect & Shout to provide 24/7 crisis text support to St Ann’s & Nottingham. Community Recording Studios received a £67.5K grant enabling them to purchase their current site, Russel Youth Club, & expand. Full Effect will remain w/ TRF.
Empowering Communities: Together cookbook sales of £120K supported the launch of independent businesses like Kina Mama & expansion of #HubbCommunityKitchen to serve broader London.During the COVID19 pandemic Hubb is making 300 meals/day for #FoodForLondonNow.Hubb remains w/ TRF.
Financials: Income decreased 15% to £6.7M with a drop in unrestricted income to £1.9M (-44%) attributed to a pause in fundraising while restructuring. Expenses remained fairly steady at £9.3M. For consecutive years, the shortfall was covered with transfers from reserves of £1.3M.
Early Years was the only program that saw income cover expenses in 2019. All others tapped their restricted reserves. Conservation was the biggest taker with £936K unrestricted funds transferred primarily to launch the Earthshot Prize. Full Effect was fully funded from transfers.
Transfers: The Endeavour Fund received a settlement grant at transfer of £561K (£243K restricted, £318K unrestricted contribution). Travalyst received a settlement grant of £7K the remainder of its restricted funds.
