This is how I jumped from $75/hr to $250/hr (remote) and $1,500/hr (on-site) in less than 2 years as an independent consultant.

1. Choose a reasonable starting rate ($75/hr for example)
2. Once youâve filled your week with billable hours, bump your rate ($100 for example) for any new clients.

3. When you get a new client, go back to your first client and propose a new rate of $125. If they do not accept, drop them (when contract is up) and go with the higher paying client for all available hours.
4. Rinse and repeat until you hit a ceiling.

This is of course if you want to continue to make the trade of increased rates vs a long term / more stable relationship with a client.
