@TiaCArango reminded me that pools used to be segregated. That’s why my mother (born in 1954) never learned how to swim and grew up scared of pools and naturally kept me away from bodies of water.

I used to make fun of myself for not knowing how to swim.

I forgot that my mother was born in Selma, Alabama & that my grandmother picked cotton. There’s no chance she would’ve learned how to swim.
Her keeping me from pools was her way of protecting me from drowning.
