The Fourth of July ostensibly celebrates July 4, 1776. But it is not meant to memorialize the way of life and how everything was on that very day. It is always been, to me, at its heart a celebration of freedoms and an independence that are uniquely American.
Anyone with a cursory knowledge of history knows those freedoms weren’t always extended to everyone. But one of the flexibilities of our system is the ability to change and expand them to include everyone who were given those inalienable rights by their Creator
So the Fourth of July is not a celebration of white supremacy as some today claim. It is our honoring the ever expanding tradition of FREEDOM that this country represents at its best. And it’s a day when we ought to celebrate what we can achieve at our best when we come together
So we shouldn’t be ashamed of today. We should be mindful of our history - but for one day we can simply celebrate the ideals that our imperfect union strives towards. And tomorrow we renew our determination to safeguard those rights and freedoms for everyone. Happy 4th of July
